How to find golf courses by length?

I have been searching for public golf courses in NJ and it seems that every golf course finder on the web just lists courses by location or by rating (the "best"). What I really want is to see a list of courses by length or by difficulty. I am basically a novice and was planning to play with someone who is just learning. I'm looking for a course that is under 6,000 yards but I can't seem to find any listings that give that information in a straightforward manner. Where should I look?
