Is hell real? or just a christian protestant way to terrorize the people?

well I am not protestant but today two friends of mine are protestant, they told me they have a record in spanish about in siberia in russia some scientifics were doing a exploration and they were excavating and.. they found like something burning and they hear sounds of human voices from hell.. I am skeptic about this topic.. because I am a catholic and the church taught us hell is not a physic place.. it's spiritual.. I think more christian protestants take this very serious..
