Do the principles of equality taught in religion go counter to the realities of the commercial world?

the fact that we have ceo's and "corporate ladders" seems to indicate that, at least in the business world, inequality is common and even expected. for one to succeed in such an environment wouldn't you have to adopt some of philosophies yourself -- and forego those religious ideas which promote fairness and inherent human worth?
