Isn't there a time period missing between B.C and A.D. ?

If B.C. is before christ and A.D. is after death......what are the years between jesus' birth and death referred to? Should we consider those years he was alive as J.L. (Jesus' Life) or something along those lines? Please no bigot responses, I don't care about that crap towards the religous side. I just want answers to the questions I asked...don't go hijacking this question with crap, please.
